research corner
In May of 2006, the Caterina Marcus Foundation Neuro-developmental Fellowship for Research in MPS Disorders was established at the Center for Development and Learning's Program for the Study of Neurodevelopmental Function in Rare Disorders at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Thanks to our support, the Center was able to recruit Dr. Karina Yelin, a medical fellow who will spend the first two years of training researching a clinical problem in MPS Disorders. Dr. Yelin will receive additional training in research methodology and one on one mentorship that will allow her to complete a research project to advance the understanding of a specific disease process. Our support will also allow the program to closely interact with the UNC Neurodevelopmental Research Center, an NIH funded center that promotes scientific collaboration among biomedical researchers from different disciplines in the field of Neurodevelopment. This will increase MPS awareness among this community of investigators and impact tranining in other related fields. More importantly, our support has allowed a new investigator to start a life time academic career in neurodevelopmental pediatrics focusing on improving clinical care and quality of life of patients suffering from MPS disorders.
In March of 2008, the Foundation agreed to fund Dr. Yelin’s fellowship for a third year. Click here to read Dr Yelin's Bio and her personal statement.
